There’s a certain comfort in sticking to your tried and tested beauty routines and cosmetics. Yet, what worked for you perhaps a decade or so ago, may not currently bring out your best features. With aging, your skin changes, and so does the way your makeup sits on your face. Therefore, understanding that and modifying your makeup techniques accordingly becomes essential.
In our early twenties, most of us learnt to apply makeup. The goal was simply to appear mature. Remember how flattering it would be if someone mistook an 18-year-old us for a 25-year-old? Yet, with passing years, the tables have turned. Now, we strive to look good irrespective of our age. Aging should never deter your beauty, and with the right makeup, it doesn’t have to.
Three professional makeup artists, all aged 60+, shared some tips regarding how one can bid goodbye to certain redundant beauty routines, eventually embracing new methods to stay radiant and sprightly. They pointed out frequent errors they notice and provided intelligent techniques to bypass them.
According to Ariane Poole, a makeup expert for women over 50, makeup can rectify anything. You don’t have to layer your face with excessive products, nor do you have to resort to Botox or fillers. She insists that foundation application can often change as one ages, and using the right formulation can make all the difference.
As per their advice, the following five critical areas can drastically enhance your makeup game if you modify your products and the techniques of their application:
1. Foundation: Primer application before foundation can be a game-changer. Primers help in maintaining makeup fidelity, ensuring your foundation doesn’t disappear within hours of application. Additionally, color and shade evaluation can make a huge difference. Your foundation should match your neck and not your face. If you feel washed out, try experimenting with some bronzer instead of opting for a darker foundation.
2. Eyebrows: Aging often leads to thinner and sparser hair, which affects the eyebrows’ look. As eyebrows balance the face and define the eye area, they play an essential role in your beauty game. Therefore, adjusting the color of your eyebrow pencil to match your current hair color, instead of sticking with the old brown or gray, can make a significant difference.
3. Eyeliner: Who said you have to let go of your eyeliner as you age? Yes, our eyes might lose a bit of definition and appear smaller, but the right eyeliner color can still work magic. Instead of black, try a mellow shade of charcoal grey or deep navy. According to your skin tone, muted brown or a soft olive might also be suitable.
4. Concealer: As concealers have evolved to become more lightweight, they should be applied on top of your foundation or tinted moisturizer, not before. If your under-eye area seems dry, using a daytime eye cream before applying concealer and then foundation can help.
5. Blush: As your skin tone changes, adding blush to your makeup routine can be beneficial. Proper placement of the blush is crucial. Avoid applying it too high on the cheekbones to prevent drawing attention to the areas under your eyes. Instead, apply it right on the cheekbone, not higher than that.
Lastly, irrespective of age, everyone should remember that beauty is timeless. Aging is a natural process, and it’s certainly not a failure. It doesn’t inhibit your ability to look fabulous or apply beautiful products to enhance your looks. Embrace your aging face, celebrate your life’s hallmarks, and never shy away from living it well.
